Jodogahama Beach

Take in surreal coastal views on Iwate’s most picturesque beach

Jodogahama Beach

Jodogahama Beach

Jodogahama Beach in Iwate Prefecture is one of Japan’s most stunning coastal destinations. Located within Sanriku Fukko National Park, Jodogahama Beach is known for its white jagged rocks, blue-green waters and lush pine trees. Jodogahama translates to “Pure Land Beach,” a reference to the Buddhist paradise and it’s easy to see why early monks believed this landscape resembled heaven on Earth.

Jodogahama is ranked among the Top 100 Swimming Spots in Japan. From late July to mid-August, a designated swimming area is open with lifeguards on duty, along with handy facilities like changing rooms and showers.

Sightseeing Cruises

One of the best ways to take in Jodogahama’s dramatic scenery is from the water. Two types of seasonal sightseeing cruises operate here, offering up-close views of the rugged cliffs, hidden coves and striking rock formations that define this stretch of coastline. Whether you choose a larger tour boat or an intimate ride on a local fishing boat, it’s a memorable way to experience the area’s natural beauty.

Umineko-maru: The larger of the two sightseeing ships connects Jodogahama with the Minato Oasis Michi-no-Eki.
