Akiu Onsen

Akiu Onsen is an onsen (hot spring) town located in Sendai City. It is counted among the three famous hot springs in Oshu (northern Tohoku region), along with Naruko Onsen, also in Miyagi Prefecture, and Iizaka Onsen, in neighboring Fukushima Prefecture. The feudal lord Date Masamune favored it, and its history spans 1,500 years. Akiu Onsen offers relaxing hot springs and stunning natural views, particularly in autumn. This onsen allows for easy day trips, as it is conveniently located just 30 to 40 minutes by public transport from central Sendai.

Akiu Onsen features a clear, colorless “sodium-calcium chloride spring” that is transparent, tasteless and odorless.

After exploring, take a relaxing dip at the onsen.

Autumn is a great time to visit Akiu Onsen. One of the most breathtaking sights in the area is Akiu Otaki Falls, which features a stunning 55-meter drop. This waterfall is one of “Japan’s 100 Best Waterfalls.” The area is abundant with maples, oaks and wild cherry trees, making it particularly beautiful from mid-October when autumn foliage fills the landscape. The observation deck offers a breathtaking view, making it an attractive place to visit. The sound of the water cascading down is thrilling and many visitors enjoy capturing the scene with their cameras. Another fantastic option is to stroll down to the basin, where you’ll feel the refreshing spray of the falls. The temple grounds nearby, home to a majestic 350-year-old ginkgo tree, turn vibrant with golden leaves, providing even more picturesque views.

While exploring Akiu, be sure to visit Rairaikyo Gorge, a beautiful spot renowned for its uniquely shaped rocks and stunning “Rairaikyo Momiji pathway”. From the verdant greenery of summer to the vibrant foliage of autumn in November, you can enjoy beautiful views throughout the seasons. The trail includes attractions like Hachi-ken Rock, approximately 14–15 meters long, and Shigure Falls, which literally translates to “autumn rain.” Also, the walkway glows at night, creating a magical experience.
