Tarumae Garo
The southern base of Mount Tarumae is home to the Tarumae Garo gorge in Hokkaido. Tarumae Garo is in Tomakomai City, about 4 kilometers from National Route 36. This beautiful gorge is a hidden paradise that offers stunning views of lush greenery, dramatic cliffs, and crystal-clear waters. The entrance to the gorge is just before the Tarumae bridge. Unlike many popular tourist spots, Tarumae Garo sees relatively few visitors, allowing you to soak in the tranquility of this natural oasis.
Tarumai Garo

Tarumai Garo reveals the region’s powerful geological history, formed by the volcanic activity of Mount Tarumai. The mountain has experienced multiple eruptions in the past, and the resulting pyroclastic flows have created the stunning landscape we see today. One of the beauties of Tarumai Garo is its vibrant ecosystem. The cliffs are about 5 meters high and are covered with over 60 types of moss. This moss looks like a velvet carpet that clings to the rough rock surfaces. In 1979, authorities designated this place as a Natural Environment Conservation Area in Tomakomai City.
What to See and Do

It is one of the works of art created by the Tarumae river, which has eroded the plateau covered in volcanic ash over the course of many years. Deep within the gorge, you can find a variety of plant life, including thick forests that shelter a wealth of wildlife. Despite its beauty, the site sees few tourists, offering a tranquil atmosphere filled with birdsong.
You can visit Lake Shikotsu, which is about an hour’s drive away. It’s a great addition to a full-day nature trip with Tarumae Garo.
Seasonal Highlights
Photo by: PIXTA/ kazuto_yossySpring, from April to June, is the best time to visit if you want to see the gorge’s lush greenery and blooming flowers. The early summer sunlight reaches the deep riverbed, creating the most beautiful scenery of the year. It is perfect for photography, especially if you capture the sunlight filtering onto the moss and water.
But in October, the landscape changes as the leaves turn different colors, creating a beautiful display of warm hues. This season is great for taking walks through the colorful scenery and capturing stunning photographs.
But it’s essential to wear comfortable shoes, as the terrain can be steep and slippery.
