The Neomon Gate, one of Kyoto’s three main gates, leads to the National Treasure Kondo Hall.

The temple has ties to the royal family and is famous for its palace-style architecture, often called the “Ninnaji Palace.” The Neomon Gate, one of Kyoto’s three main gates, leads to expansive grounds with the National Treasure Kondo Hall. A five-story pagoda, standing 36.18 meters tall, houses five Buddhist divinities. The pagoda is designed to withstand earthquakes and is an Important Cultural Property.

The 17th-century North Garden features a pond shaped like the character “心” (meaning “heart”) and a teahouse over 200 years old. Mount Joju offers the 88 Temple pilgrimage route, with replicas of the 88 temples of Shikoku. Completing the route grants the same blessings as visiting the original sites.

Ninna-ji Temple celebrates several festivals each year. In spring, the temple fills with vibrant cherry blossoms, including the somei yoshino and the late-blooming omurozakura. As a National Place of Scenic Beauty, the temple has celebrated these blossoms since the Edo period.

Higan-e

From September 22 to 24, Ninna-ji observes Higan-e, a Buddhist event during the autumn equinox to honor ancestors and loved ones. Visitors come to pray in a peaceful, intimate setting, offering a quieter experience than other public festivals.

Reitaisai

Reitaisai, Ninna-ji’s grand annual festival, takes place on October 14. It honors Kannon Bosatsu, the main deity of the temple’s main hall, and Emperor Uda. The festival features traditional gagaku (elegant court music) and parades with imperial costumes, reflecting the temple’s royal connections.
