Every summer, the quiet city of Obihiro in Hokkaido transforms into a spectacular canvas of light and color during the Kachimai Fireworks Festival. Held on August 13, this is one of Japan’s most dazzling and artistic fireworks shows. With roots dating back to 1929, the event has evolved into a nationally recognized celebration and serves as the official start for the local Obon festivities.
Kachimai Fireworks Festival

First launched nearly a century ago by the Tokachi Mainichi Shimbun newspaper, the Kachimai Fireworks Festival was created to celebrate the paper’s 10th anniversary and uplift the local community during challenging times. It was the first fireworks show ever held in Hokkaido. Despite the war and unrest, the event was revived in 1956. Since then, it grown into one of the largest and most innovative summer festivals in Japan.
Set along the Tokachi River, the display makes full use of its curved riverside location to create a panoramic spectacle. It also serves as the lead-in to the Obihiro Heigen Festival, held downtown from August 14–16.
Festival Highlights

The Kachimai display is a full performance of lights music, lasers and stage effects. The show is precisely timed to a curated soundtrack, making it feel more like a live concert in the sky.
The festival includes stunning sequences of artistic fireworks, including the popular nishiki-kamuro, a sparkling gold finale that fills the sky like a shimmering curtain. Past festivals have included 3D-style fireworks launched from scaffolding, synchronized lighting systems and immersive, surround-sound elements.
The show closes with a grand finale lasting over 10 minutes, filling the entire horizon with bursts of color.
