Paradise for nature lovers.

Rebun Island lies 60 km west of Wakkanai City. It stretches 29 km north to south and 8 km east to west, covering about 82 square kilometers. The eastern coast has gentle hills, while the western coast has cliffs formed by strong winter winds.

One important place to visit is the Rebun Lady’s Slipper Colony. This endangered orchid represents the island and grows in a specific area on the north side. The best time to see these queens of orchids is from late May to mid-June. Another stunning location is Cape Sukoton. It is located at the northernmost point of the island. From there, you can see wide views of the Sea of Okhotsk and Rishiri Island. The cape is known for the notable Sukoton Rock, a massive rock formation that rises impressively from the sea. The Momoiwa Observatory also offers stunning ocean views, unique rock formations such as Momoiwa or Peach Rock and vibrant summer alpine wildflowers. A gentle hike from Kafuka Ferry Terminal is worth visiting.

If you prefer a leisurely experience, head to North Canary Park to see a preserved school building used in the movie “The Canaries of the North”. Visitors can view movie photographs and costumes and relax at the park’s cafe with a view of Rishiri Fuji. Cape Sukai is another top spot. The tip of the beautiful arched cove is the most popular tourist spot on Rebun Island. You can see the highly transparent cobalt blue sea and enjoy the view of the sea and sky.

Have your fill of the freshest seafood.

Rebun Island is a treasure trove of fresh seafood. The island is famous for its sea urchins, considered some of the best in Hokkaido. Two main types are available: the purple sea urchin and the red sea urchin. Be sure to try a sea urchin rice bowl or a bowl topped with salmon roe for an authentic taste of Rebun. Another unique local treat is Milpis. This drink combines milk with an extract made from boiling Rishiri kelp. Its unique flavor unfolds differently for each person.
