The Kyoto Tango Railway is a network of three lines that wind through the Kyoto, connecting lesser-known towns like Amino, Toyooka and Amanohashidate. Operated by WILLER Trains, it serves both as a vital public transport system for locals and a nostalgic, scenic journey for travelers. While these towns may be off the typical tourist path, they offer a different side of Kyoto with small fishing villages, coastal charm, traditional architecture and natural beauty.
Three special sightseeing trains, Kuromatsu, Aka-Matsu and Ao-Matsu, operate along the Kyoto Tango Railway, each offering a unique way to explore the region. With beautifully crafted interiors, warm wooden design and panoramic windows, these trains transform a simple rail journey into a relaxing ride through the Sea of Japan’s coastline, forested mountains and quiet rural landscapes.

The Aka-Matsu travels between Nishi-Maizuru and Amanohashidate, including the Nagu Coast and the Yura River Bridge. The route ends in Amanohashidate, a picturesque town known for its unique sandbar, which appears to float in the sky when viewed from nearby lookout points.
The train’s warm, reddish wood interiors and relaxed seating (sofas with wide windows) make it a comfortable and casual way to enjoy the Sea of Japan. Drinks and light snacks are available onboard, making the ride feel more like a scenic café than a train. It’s a great choice for travelers who want a laid-back, scenic experience without the formality of a full dining train.
Important Note: Boarding tickets are required in addition to the basic fare ticket (¥800 per person).
