Yagen Onsen is mainly known for its hot springs that flow directly from the source. The water here is clear, colorless and alkaline. It helps relieve fatigue, stomach problems, stress and women’s health issues. Under the protection of the guardian Buddha Yakushi Nyorai, visitors have been rejuvenated here for over 400 years.
Yagen Onsen offers several bathing options. Kappa no Yu is a free hot spring with emerald-green water but has limited facilities and seasonal closures. Fufu Kappa no Yu is a municipal open-air bath with separate sections for men and women, open year-round for a fee.
The charm of Yagen Onsen extends beyond its baths. The fresh air and the surrounding forest create an environment perfect for Shinrin-yoku or forest bathing. The ideal times to experience this practice are early June and July, when fresh greenery appears and mid-October to early November, when the forest turns into a vibrant mosaic of orange and gold.
Places to Visit
Photo by: PIXTA/ Tsuka-PYagen Valley is a great place to enjoy the spectacular wild landscapes of northern Japan. As you walk the trails, the lively sounds of nature surround you. The footpath along the stream occasionally leads down to the banks of the Ohata River in Yagen Gorge. Its unique riverbed has formed stunning landscapes over thousands of years. Along the trail, you may catch a glimpse of wildlife, such as the elusive Japanese serow and even small birds and waterfowl gather in the area during their breeding season, making the area around the stream very lively.
You can explore the remains of an old forest railway that operated until 1963. Walking trails lead you through the famous Aomori Hiba (cypress) forest. One highlight is the tunnel located across from the cypress forest. Built by hand in the early Showa era, this tunnel adds to the village’s historical charm. As you walk through, the darkness envelops you, but soon, you’ll see light at the end.
In addition to the tunnel, a picturesque waterfall cascades into Yagen Gorge, adding to the stunning scenery. Whether you are enjoying the hot springs, walking along the wooded paths, or admiring the vibrant colors of the forests, Yagen Onsen Village offers a truly unique travel experience.
