Universal Studios Japan

Universal Studios Japan (USJ) is one of Osaka’s most popular attractions and is consistently ranked among the top theme parks in Japan. You can easily spend days here, racing through Bowser’s Castle in Super Nintendo World, flying above the Forbidden Forest in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, or causing chaos with the Minions.

With rides, shows and seasonal events for all ages, Universal Studios Japan is an easy addition to your itinerary if you’re staying in Osaka or nearby Kyoto.

Super Nintendo World

Super Nintendo World opened in 2021 and is now one of the most popular zones at Universal Studios Japan. Visitors often line up before the park opens, hoping to secure timed-entry tickets. In December 2024, the area expanded with Donkey Kong Country, a jungle-themed zone with brand-new rides and games to play.

*To enter Donkey Kong Country, you will need a Super Nintendo World Area Admission Guaranteed Ticket or an Area Admission Numbered Ticket/Lottery Ticket.

The world-building here is seriously impressive. Piranha Plants snap overhead, Koopa Troopas patrol brick walls and the whole area quickly becomes filled with Mario sound effects. With a Power-Up Band, you can punch blocks, collect coins, battle mini-bosses and unlock hidden challenges. It genuinely feels like stepping inside a Nintendo game.

The best ride is Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, an AR ride that speeds through Bowser’s Castle, collecting coins and items. Families also enjoy Yoshi’s Adventure, a gentler ride with great views of the park and Donkey Kong’s Crazy Mine Carts in the new Donkey Kong Country zone.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is one of USJ’s most detailed and immersive areas. Walk through the snowy streets of Hogsmeade and you’ll hear the Hogwarts Express in the distance. You can also pick up robes, wands and house-themed merchandise or visit the Three Broomsticks for their delicious Butterbeer.

The main attraction, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, takes you through Hogwarts on a motion-based 4K3D ride. For great views of USJ’s Hogwarts Castle, visitors should ride the Flight of the Hippogriff. 

Minion Park

Minion Park is one of USJ’s most colorful and energetic zones, packed with mischief, loud laughter and plenty of yellow chaos. The streets are filled with playful shopfronts, themed snacks and spots to grab photos with your favorite little troublemakers. The main attraction, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, is a 3D motion ride. On this ride, you’ll join Gru and the girls for a fast, family-friendly adventure. With surprise Minion appearances and cute merchandise, it’s a fun stop for families.

Jurassic Park

The Jurassic Park area is a long-time favorite at USJ. With jungle-style pathways, misty corners and prehistoric sound effects, it feels like you’ve wandered into dinosaur territory. Its star attraction, The Flying Dinosaur, is one of the park’s most intense rides — a high-speed coaster that sends you soaring face-down through the air for a full “raptor-flight” experience. Thrill-seekers shouldn’t skip this one.
