Kobe is often treated as a quick stop between Osaka and Himeji, but it rewards travelers who take their time. Known for its historic foreign district, the city blends port history with traditional onsen and modern shopping. Just a short walk from the city center, Sorakuen Garden feels far removed from the busy shopping streets. It is the city’s only traditional Japanese garden, combining classic landscape design with architectural details that reflect Kobe’s international past.

Sorakuen is a pond-centered strolling garden, designed to be enjoyed slowly. Paths circle the water, with stone bridges and stepping stones guiding you through carefully arranged scenery. The layout draws from mountain landscapes, using changes in elevation, streams and small waterfalls to create a sense of depth.

Views shift as you move, with each turn offering a new angle rather than a single focal point. Seasonal changes also shape the garden’s natural charm, with over 4,000 Azaleas blooming in spring and maple trees bringing vibrant reds and yellows in autumn. The garden is also home to a camphor tree believed to be around 500 years old.

History and Cultural Highlights of Sorakuen Garden

The garden began as part of the private residence of Kodera Kenkichi, a former mayor of Kobe, with construction starting in the late 19th century and finishing in the early 20th century. Kobe City took ownership in 1941 and opened it to the public as “Sorakuen,” meaning “harmony and joy together.” While much of the original estate was lost during World War II, here several structures remain or were later relocated.

The former Hassam residence, built in 1902 for a foreign trader and moved from Kitano in 1963, reflects Kobe’s early international community. The Former Kodera Family Stable, with its European-style design, reflects Western architectural influence from the same period. Both buildings are only open to the public on limited occasions. In 2026, the interior of the former Hassam residence will be open on weekends throughout May.

The funayagata is the preserved rooftop section of an Edo-period river pleasure boat once used by the lord of Himeji Domain. Built between the late 17th and early 18th centuries and relocated here for preservation, it is the only surviving structure of its kind in Japan. 

Matsumae Park sits at the southern tip of Hokkaido in Matsumae City. Spread over a vast area, the park is home to cultural sites such as the famous Matsumae Castle, a temple area, and the residence of the Matsumae clan. But what really makes this park special is its spectacular cherry blossoms. With around 10,000 trees across about 250 species, it is one of Japan’s favorite cherry blossom destinations.

At the heart of the park stands Matsumae Castle, the only traditional-style castle in Hokkaido. First completed in 1854, it played an important role in protecting the region. A fire destroyed the original castle many years ago. The current castle was rebuilt in 1961 and still reflects its past. Surrounding the castle, you’ll find an old shrine and historical paths that tell stories of the Edo period. 

In fact, the cherry blossoms here have a long history as well. Centuries ago, merchants, samurai, and aristocratic families brought these trees with them. Over time, local people have carefully nurtured and developed them, creating the rich diversity that exists today. You can feel this deep connection between nature and history as you walk through the park.

Cherry Blossom Season at Matsumae Park

One of the best things about Matsumae Park is that you can enjoy the beauty of the cherry blossoms over a long period of time. The flowers bloom from early April to late May. This means that visitors have plenty of time to see the flowers at their best. The early bloomers of the season gradually give way to the middle and late bloomers, creating a changing scene every week.

The park is known for its wide range of cherry blossoms, from soft white to deep pink, and even rare greenish tones.

The large grounds of Matsumae Park, covering over 200,000 square meters, offer many scenic spots to explore. The “Cherry Blossom Sample Garden” is like a living encyclopedia, where you can see many different types of cherry trees in one place. There’s also a second park on a hill, where you can enjoy a stunning view of the entire area and the blue waters of the Tsugaru Strait.

Along the walkways, especially on Satozakura Road, cherry trees line both sides, creating a beautiful tunnel of flowers. You’ll also find famous old trees, some over 300 years old, standing proudly as symbols of the park’s history.

The perfect way to conclude a cherry blossom viewing trip is to see the illuminated cherry blossoms at night. The castle and cherry blossoms reflected in the moat make for a very picturesque scene.

Standing as a brilliant crimson landmark in Nagoya City, Osu Kannon Temple has served as the city’s spiritual anchor for centuries. Founded in 1333 in Gifu Prefecture and moved to Nagoya by Tokugawa Ieyasu in the early 1600s, the temple marks the gateway to the eclectic Osu Shopping District. This central Nagoya area is a mix of traditional markets, street food stalls and pop culture shops.

The temple belongs to the Shingon sect of Buddhism and is dedicated to Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. While the current structures are 20th-century reconstructions following World War II, the site remains historically important to Aichi Prefecture.

Visitors enter through the Niomon Gate, flanked by towering guardian statues, and often hear the tolling of the “Women’s Bell.” Cast in 1966 and donated entirely by local women, it rings each morning at 6 a.m. as a prayer for children’s well-being.

In the main courtyard, a population of pigeons adds a lively energy to the grounds. Yet, the space truly comes alive on the 18th and 28th of every month, when a popular flea market transforms the courtyard into a treasure hunter’s paradise of antiques, kimono, and curios.

At its center stands the main hall (Daihiden), where a revered wooden statue of Kannon is enshrined. Tradition holds that Kobo Daishi carved the statue, and it survived the destruction that claimed earlier structures. Beneath the hall lies the Shinpukuji Library, which houses over 15,000 classical texts, including the Kojiki, a record of Japan’s mythological origins.

Spiritual Services and Temple Highlights

For those seeking personal protection, the temple provides several unique spiritual services:

• Fumonden Hall: Inside, visitors can find the twelve zodiac guardian deities. Receive amulets or personal Buddha images linked to their birth year.
  
• Car Prayer Hall: This hall specializes in blessings for safe driving and protection on long journeys.
  
• Tooth Memorial and Mound: The temple also holds a unique memorial service for lost teeth and dentures. Temple staff collect them throughout the year and pray over them together, with a dedicated tooth mound located on the grounds. Visitors can receive a “tooth offering bag” (¥2,000 large, ¥1,000 small) at the main hall or Fumonden Hall and participate at any time.

Visit on the 18th of each month for the auspicious day of the Holy Kannon. On this day, visitors can hear chanting as priests perform special goma (fire) rituals at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. The evening service is particularly powerful, combining the rhythmic fire ritual with the recitation of the Great Prajnaparamita Sutra.

Kitakata, a small city in western Fukushima Prefecture, is known around Japan for Kitakata Ramen. In April, Kitakata becomes a flower-viewing destination as well as a ramen hub thanks to the Nicchu Line’s weeping cherry blossoms. About 1,000 weeping cherry trees bloom along this disused railway-turned pedestrian path. 

Kitakata is accessible from Tokyo station in about three and a half hours by train. For cherry blossom lovers who want to eat ramen for breakfast (as is tradition at some local restaurants), this city is an inviting spring getaway.

History of the Nicchu Line

The Nicchusen (Nicchu Line) opened in 1938. Five stations and 11.6 kilometers of tracks led to the Atsushio and Nicchu onsen (hot spring) areas located to the north. Years later, problems like declining passenger numbers led to the Nicchu Line’s closure in 1984.

Memories of the Nicchu Line are preserved in places like the former Atsushio station. Now called the Atsushio Station Remains Memorial Museum, this historic site is about 20 minutes from Kitakata station by car or taxi.

Near Kitakata station, about three kilometers of the Nicchu Line were converted into a walking and cycling path lined with weeping cherry blossom trees.

Enjoying Cherry Blossoms on the Former Nicchu Line

The Nicchu Line weeping cherry blossoms typically bloom from around mid to late April. Along this cherry blossom lane, visitors will find canopies of flowers framed by the surrounding townscape and mountains. Benches located at certain points provide places to relax and enjoy the scenery. The highlight of this path, however, is a preserved steam train that was once used on the old railroad.

During the Kitakata Cherry Blossom Festival—held around the time the trees bloom—visitors can see the blossoms illuminated at night.

Visitors to the Nicchu Line weeping cherry blossoms should also visit Tsuruga Castle in Aizuwakamatsu. As Japan began modernizing in the late 19th century, this castle became a stronghold. Men and women of samurai families fought to preserve the shogunate, eventually enduring a siege at Tsuruga Castle. Ultimately, these fighters lost their battle, but their stories live on.

Multiple varieties of cherry blossoms bloom around Tsuruga Castle from about mid to late April. Although cities across Japan have castles surrounded by cherry blossoms, Tsuruga Castle is the only one in mainland Japan with a red roof. Photos taken here are one-of-a-kind.

High in the mountains of Higashiyoshino, Takami Village, locally better known as Takami no Sato, is almost unknown to tourists. It is located just down the road from Takami Pass, which separates Nara and Mie Prefectures. Sitting about 650 meters above sea level near Mount Takami, this place is often called a “garden in the sky.” It wasn’t always a tourist spot; years ago, it was forest land. But when the forestry industry declined, the owners slowly transformed the mountain by planting weeping cherry trees. Today, that effort has turned into one of the most beautiful spring landscapes in Kansai.

Takami no Sato

Takami no Sato is not a typical cherry blossom spot. This hillside features over 1,000 weeping cherry trees instead of the common Somei Yoshino trees. Because of the higher altitude, the blossoms bloom later than in other spots of Nara, usually peaking around mid-April.

At the top, “Millennium Hill” offers a wide, open view where layers of pink stretch across the mountains. On sunny days, the colors feel almost unreal, light pink blossoms mixed with yellow forsythia and white spirea. From up there, you can even see parts of the distant Yoshino Mountains.

Cherry Blossom Season

The park is only open during cherry blossom season, typically for a short window in April. A walking path winds uphill for about 600 meters, with plenty of steps along the way. If walking isn’t your thing, there’s a free shuttle and small carts inside the park that make getting around easier.

There are benches scattered here and there where you can sit and enjoy the view. Near the main area, you will find small food stalls and cafes, which serve a good selection of local snacks as well as udon and curry. Seasonal dishes such as sakura taiyaki and soft serve are popular, although they sometimes sell out quickly. As the village is far from the city, it seems peacefully isolated from the crowded Hanami spots.

Weekdays are calmer, while weekends can get busy, especially when the flowers are at their peak.

Mountainside Charm

Reaching Takami village takes a bit of effort, but that’s part of its charm. From the nearest station, a seasonal direct bus runs during the blossom period. 

The village sits deep in the mountains, surrounded by forests of Yoshino cedar. Nature walks along the crystal clear Takami River will refresh your mind and soul.

A growing community of artists and craftsmen has settled here, drawn by the laid-back lifestyle. Some local artists run small studios where you can try simple pottery or watch traditional items being made. Or find craft classes at the Yoshino Cedar Wood Workshop or Shop.
