Hinotori Limited Express

The Hinotori Limited Express isn’t trying to compete with the speed of the Shinkansen. Named after the mythical phoenix, or “firebird,” this premium train is Kintetsu Railway’s flagship service, designed for travelers who want to enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Running between Osaka and Nagoya, the two-hour journey takes you across the rural landscapes of Mie and Nara prefectures, trading concrete tunnels for sweeping views of rice fields and mountain ranges.

The sleek, deep-red exterior carries through to the interior.

From the moment you step onboard, the Hinotori makes an immediate impression with its elegant, almost luxurious design. The sleek, deep-red exterior carries through to the interior, where clean lines, warm lighting and a spacious layout create a refined atmosphere that feels a step above your typical limited express train.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the train and there are spacious multipurpose restrooms alongside standard facilities. For luggage, the train provides multiple free lockers, including both key-operated and IC card-operated options. This is especially convenient compared to the Shinkansen, where oversized luggage requires a reservation.

Between cars 2 and 3 and cars 7 and 8, you’ll find bench seating areas. These shared spaces give you room to stretch out or take a break from your seat along the journey. There’s also a small cafe area near the first and last cars, where you can buy a cup of freshly ground coffee or snacks and Hinotori-themed souvenirs from the mini vending machine

If you want to take a piece of the experience home, Hinotori-branded merchandise is easy to find. Dedicated vending machines are located on the boarding platforms at Osaka-Namba Station, Kintetsu-Nagoya Station and Kintetsu Tsuruhashi Station, stocked with items like keychains, pencils, towels and other Hinotori-themed goods.

Premium vs Standard Seating

These seats deliver the best experience

The Hinotori offers two classes: Premium Car and Standard Car, both designed for comfort.

Premium Car

Located in the first and last cars, these seats deliver the best experience. The layout is a spacious 2+1 configuration with wide leather seats and a generous 130 cm pitch. Each seat has a fixed back shell, so you can fully recline using electric controls without affecting the person behind, as well as a footrest and tray table. The elevated floor and wide windows create panoramic forward or rear-facing views, further enhanced by the glass-enclosed driver’s cab.

Standard Car

Although not as fancy as the premium car, the standard car still feels modern and spacious, with a 116 cm seat pitch and the same back-shell design for stress-free reclining. Seats are finished in a sleek grey tone and each includes a power outlet. While you won’t get the same panoramic cab views, the large windows still make this a comfortable and practical option.
